Carbotreat Maritime Carbon Capture systems is a complete solution which can be applied to newbuild and retrofit ships. By adding a Ship-Based Carbon Capture system to capture the CO₂ exhaust gasses, the total CO₂ emissions can be reduced by at least 70% and might even reach zero emissions. The captured CO₂ can be cooled and stored on board. Onshore, it can be used for further processing or stored.  This is a promising step towards a closed carbon loop.

Carbon Capture: three main system components

Our Ship-Based Carbon Capture system consists of three components. On board, the captured CO₂ can be cooled and stored. On land it will be prepared for storage or utilization in liquid form. This may sound like a relatively simple process, but Carbotreat’s unique capability and experience are crucial to achieving a pure gas that meets the requirements for further processing. Optimal heat integration and selecting the right solvent and process parameters ensure an efficient process that produces this pure gas.

On board, the CO₂ is captured in a 12-metre-high capture system. These skid-based systems are easy to install.  

2. Liquefaction

The easiest and most compact way to store on board, transport, and prepare CO₂ for storage or utilization is in liquid form.

The dry liquid CO2 from our liquefaction installations can be stored on-site at Carbotreat in a stainless-steel tank. 

Carbon capture:
How it works

In just two steps the CO2 can be captured from exhaust gases. 

Step 1:
In the capture system, the carbon dioxide is separated from the other gases using an amine-based solvent in an absorber. This works in the following way: the carbon-rich gas enters the absorber, where the amine-based solvent is on a packing medium. The packing medium provides a surface area for the gas and the solvent to react with each other. The solvent then captures the CO2. Clean exhaust gas leaves the system. Apart from the residual gases, the solvent containing the chemically bound CO₂ enters the next step in the capturing process: the desorber.

Step 2:
In the desorber, the carbon-rich solvent is heated to a temperature where the carbon dioxide is released from the solvent. Using this desorption process almost 100 percent pure CO2 becomes available for further processing.

Suitable vessel types

The average world merchant fleet consists of almost 80,000 cargo vessels. Short Sea Shipping is responsible for more than 70% of maritime transport in the interconnected seas of the eastern Mediterranean, the Aegean Sea, the Marmara Sea, the Black Sea, and all rivers flowing into the Black Sea.

With this number of ships, decarbonization becomes a difficult puzzle. Apart from the destruction of capital, it’s simply not possible to build new ships quickly enough. Because of these reasons, carbon capture is a valuable addition to the spectrum of ways we can lower the CO2 emissions of an existing fleet and new vessels. Just imagine: if we can also add green gas in the near future, then a vessel could sail completely CO2 neutral.
